Children's Beds FAQ's
When selecting beds for small rooms, especially for kids, it's important to choose options that maximise space while still providing a safe, comfortable place for your child to rest and play. Here are some of the best types of beds for small children's rooms, considering functionality, space efficiency, and versatility:
Loft Beds: Loft beds allow for significant use of the space underneath. You can fit a desk, a seating area, or storage beneath a loft bed, making it an excellent choice for very small rooms where every square inch counts. Our Forest Teepee Loft Bed becomes the centrepiece of the room itself, and the canopy creates a magical treehouse den.
Bunk Beds: Perfect for siblings sharing a room, bunk beds stack two beds vertically, freeing up floor space for other furniture or play areas. Some designs come with storage options or a trundle bed, adding even more functionality to a small space. We offer triple sleeper bunk beds which are perfect for siblings or co-sleeping families.
Trundle Beds: A trundle bed is a second bed that pulls out from underneath the main bed frame, offering an extra sleeping space that can be tucked away when not in use. This is a great solution for sleepovers or for blended families - the trundle can be used at the weekends and holidays without permanently taking up room space.
When choosing a bed for a small room, it's also important to consider the decor and layout of the room to ensure the bed complements the space without overwhelming it. Look for beds with built-in storage to minimise the need for additional furniture and choose light colours to help make the room appear larger.
Additionally, consider the child's age, needs, and safety—opt for beds with appropriate guard rails and sturdy construction to ensure a safe sleeping environment.
Most bunk beds are designed to stack on top of each other and will only be tested to safety standards in this set up - we don't recommend that parents try to fashion two single beds out of an existing bunk bed.
We've got you covered with our Neat Single Bunk Bed which we designed to meet this need - you can seamlessly transform this bunk bed into two individual single beds without any additional purchase.
Our Natty Bunk Bed can be transformed into a Guarded Single Bed for younger children, with the help of our Bed Feet, but the bottom bunk can't become a stand-alone single bed.
Bunk beds can be totally safe for kids as long as certain precautions are taken into consideration:
Weight Limit and Stability: Ensure that the bunk bed is tested to support significant weight - we test ours with a static weight limit of 100kg per bed! This offers peace of mind around potential structural issues or collapses.
Mattress Thickness: It's crucial to follow the guidelines regarding mattress thickness, especially when the bed is lofted. Our recommendation not to exceed 14cm in thickness helps maintain the structural integrity of the bed and prevents potential entrapment and fall hazards. Our single bed mattress is 12.5cm thick so it's perfect for this.
Age Recommendations: European Safety Standards EN 747-1,2:2012+A1:2015 advise against the use of loft and bunk beds for children under 6 years old due to the risk of falls and injuries. It's important to adhere to these guidelines to minimise the risk of accidents.
Separation Option: Opting for a bunk bed that can be separated into individual beds provides added safety and flexibility as children grow. This feature allows for the transition from bunk beds to separate beds, catering to changing needs and preferences while ensuring safety.
Regular Maintenance and Inspections: Regularly inspecting the bunk beds for any signs of wear, damage, or instability is essential for maintaining safety. Ensuring that all components are properly assembled and tightened helps prevent accidents.
By following these guidelines and ensuring that bunk beds are used appropriately and maintained correctly, they can provide a safe and functional sleeping solution for children and adults alike.
